Any advice on a bass amp/cab? Looking in very general terms right now, hoping to not spend a fortune. Probably will use it for live gigs and recording.

Are you looking for a recorder, usb mic, or an interface? If you have a good computer you can get a decent usb mic like the yeti or audio technica ones. Only problem with usb mics(I'm told) is that they will have a lag which is a problem if you are singing along with something. If you want to record guitar and other instruments along with vocals then you could get an interface from m-audio or presonus which usually come with basic software, thou you would need a mic with that for vocals. If you don't have a decent comp then buy some sort of recorder, hopefully with an xlr(mic) input because onboard mics usually aren't very good, but work fine if you aren't doing any pro recording. this is kind of old but i'm just seeing it.. i used to have a Blue Snowball usb mic, and i never had any problems with "lag" (latency). i used it extensively and never had a single problem with my tracks being off synch. it even worked perfectly on my old POS desktop that only has 512mb of ram and a 2.5ghz celeron processor. it was definitely worth the $65 i paid for it. |

I use an old line 6 tone port with an sm57 for on the fly recording through my laptop. Works surprisingly well. You can get them cheap on ebay. I got the ux2 which was a little more but it has 2 xlr imputs. |

OK, so I'm finally looking in to getting a tube head after using a couple solid state heads and have a few questions.
I play gigs with my band often and wanted to know if a 50W tube head would be enough power or should I go with a 100W tube head. The only experience I have with tube heads is playing a couple shows at the Worcester Palladium and having them all mic'd to their huge PA and speakers. (talking about main stage not the upstairs smaller stage) I play in a metal band and don't really care about price at this point since I would have to save up anyways. Anyways, any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

for whatever reason, a 50 watt tube amp is immensely louder than a 50 watt solid state amp. most places will mic you up anyway. i see a lot of guys that play small shithole bars with dual recs and it's overkill really. lower wattage will also let you get up into power tube distortion quicker, where the sacred tone lies. 50 watts should be good unless you're playing fucking arenas
hell, mesa just put out a 25 watt mini-rec, that would be plenty of power for club shows. i hear they sound great dimed This post has been edited by MNHHNGBFS: Nov 20 2011, 03:58 PM |

Yeah - And unlike solid states, tube half stacks sound better when they are cranked the fuck up. And that's almost too loud in some situations.

Thanks that helps a lot.
And yeah, the places I normally play are smaller clubs, I'm just sick of the solid state making my tone all muffled, I've one as long as I could without a tube head haha. |

i like the song "Gift" by Old Man Gloom a lot and i'd like to play the acoustic part on guitar.
being a beginner, however, i'm having difficulty in figuring it out by myself. i couldn't find tabs for it. does anybody have tabs for "Gift" or could upload them? i'd appreciate it. in the meantime, i'm going to try figure it out by ear. |

Does anyone know anything/have any experience with the Ibanez SZ520? I've been looking into getting to upgrade from my RG3EXFM1 and was wondering how good it is. I know they've been discontinued for a few years, so finding one to try out might be difficult.

It sounded amazing, if Orange wasn't so expensive I'd get one in a heart beat. |

wise man say, you get what you pay for.
so im thinking of downsizing my rig. Its getting really old lugging around my halfstack. And to be honest, its just plain overkill. Sure, it sounds fucking awesome, but I only play it on half power anyway. Its a peavey ultra plus. They made them in the early to mid 90's. Its like a 5150 with a good clean channel. Or an earlier better version of the XXX. Im in the process of moving all my stuff 3500 miles, so thats also coming into account. I was thinking like a nice fender deluxe, maybe an orange combo. I don't play heavy stuff all the time, but I want to be able to have the ability to when I need it. Im more after a nice warm tone. Nice cleans and searing leads. any recommendations? |

I have a really stupid noob question i need help with regarding tuning.
Im playing bass in a punk hardcore band next week that is in DROP B tuning. Can someone help me out and tell me what gauge strings would be best, and what exactly is the tuning for each string? ( i think its B, f#, b, e) If i already have my bass set for A#, that means all i really have to do is just tune up half a step right? I dont really need to get a new set of strings? Im obviously hopeless with this stuff and need some help Thanks in advance This post has been edited by Ryan: Jun 12 2012, 09:35 PM |

that tuning is right, but tuning to a higher pitch without a new setup is usually not recommended. the added string tension is gonna knock your current setup out of whack, so it might not play as good as it does now. plus there's the intonation. if your intonation is off, you're not gonna sound very good playing with a band (some notes will sound out of tune even when you're in tune.)

For anyone interested in classical guitar:
I found this midi on some old angelfire website. Apparently it was supposed to be the theme for some online rpg from 2005 that never got finished, but I really liked it. http://www.mediafire.com/?efb10kc96c3cqeu I made a guitar pro file from it. It's not very difficult to play, and it sounds really nice. http://www.mediafire.com/?j7nkdcq9uqdotd3 |
